Starting A Jewelry Collection

Unlike traditional jewelry collections, you don't need to limit yourself to pieces that you only wear for special occasions- every day is a special occasion. Whether costume jewelry, or specialty diamond pieces, jewelry adds a fashionable touch to every outfit. Even the fashion industry's finest know that jewelry finishes the outfit- Marchesa's Georgina Chapman notes that if you only have $100 to spend, buy a statement piece of jewelry. And "Project Runway" judge Michael Kors notes "Every woman should treat herself to a big pair of classic, round-cut diamond studs."

To help you refine or begin your jewelry collection, here are a few tips from master gemologists and stylists:

  • The first thing to consider when creating a jewelry collection is purchasing and seeking pieces that you LOVE. No matter the cost, you should feel like the items make a statement of who you are and the person you'd like to portray to the world.
  • Yellow gold, white gold and platinum pieces are really a matter of choice for the wearer. In recent years, yellow gold has made a huge comeback. But don't be afraid to mix and match- a yellow gold necklace looks just as lovely worn with a white gold cuff.
  • Pearls are classic pieces and should be a staple in every woman's jewelry wardrobe. No matter single stranded or multiple layers, pearls are a romantic, beautiful addition to a simple black dress, wedding gown or fashionable outfit. To add a bit of drama, purchase black Tahitian pearls.
  • Right handed diamond rings tell others about your independence and style. Choose one that adds a bit of flash and sparkle to catch others' eyes.
  • Don't forget your birthstone. Just like your zodiac sign, your gemstone tells others a bit about your personality- rubies imply passion, emeralds imply devotion, sapphires imply peace. To learn more about your birthstone and what it means about you, click here
  • A favorite among celebrities on the red-carpet and premieres, color diamonds in yellow, pink and blue tones add an unexpected sense of glamor to rings, earrings and bracelets. Try wearing them with classic colorless diamonds for a more bold jewelry look.
  • For diamond earrings, start with basic studs and hoops as these pieces never go out of style. Add more fashionable additions in different styles like different metals or gemstones. Play with proportion but don't wear large earrings with a chunky necklace- only wear one statement piece at a time!
  • Bangles in white gold, yellow gold or numerous colors are great, versatile accessories and can be worn with casual outfits or dressed up for a night on the town.
  • Traditionally, women have worn only one necklace at a time to add a touch of sparkle to the decolletage. Yet new trends show that you can layer your pieces for added flare. If you have a more traditional job, try to stick with neutrals like gold, black, white, or colorless or a simple diamond solitaire while at work but don't be afraid to add a pop of color for when going out at night.
  • Practical yet fashionable, watches add a delicate and understated elegance to any ensemble. Women can even wear a more simple men's watch. Try and find one that you would feel comfortable wearing day and night.
  • Cocktails rings can be everything from a large, single stone or a more artsy arrangement of metalwork and gems. These are traditionally considered costume jewelry but are fashionable additions to your collection and can even be worn with more than one at a time.
  • Most woman have a certain ring, bracelet or necklace that they inherit from their loved ones that emulates a decade long past. But don't limit your vintage selections to just gifted pieces and start your own collection to pass down for generations to come.
